Portage Physical Therapists, Inc. feels that some of the best therapy is started at home. Home care services have been provided to patients in Portage and Summit counties since the mid-1970's. Therapy services can include Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy services that are delivered within the patient's home. These patients can include an individual in the recovery process, learning to adjust to a new disability, or dealing with a chronic condition. More and more older individuals are electing to live independently despite diminishing capabilities. Younger adults who are disabled or recuperating from acute illness/injuries also choose home care. Chronically ill infants and children may also benefit from therapy in their loving and secure home environments. For patients and their families home care provides a sense of independence, privacy and control.

In-Home Physical Therapy services may include:

Evaluation for home needs including recommendations for home modifications to make life "easier"
Establishing and teaching various exercise and activities
Gait and transfer training
Instructing patients and caretakers in use of medical equipment such as walkers, canes, prosthetics and other orthopaedic devices
Coordinating other in-home services

In-Home Occupational Therapy Services May Include:

Evaluating a patients level of function
Guiding patients in therapeutic, creative and self-care activities
Helping patients adapt to age-related changes such as decreased energy and vision
Assisting patient to increase physical strength and endurance to maintain self sufficiency
Identifying and reinforcing the older adults abilities to live independently

In-Home Speech Therapy Services May Include:

Improving communication skills and memory
Instruct patient and caretakers in therapeutic exercises
Psychosocial support for patient and family
